Final Fantasy 11 Offers Extended Free Trial

Square Enix is planning to launch an unlimited free trial for Final Fantasy 11 in September 2026, along with a raised level cap. This update will increase the trial level cap from 50 to 75 for the first time in nearly a decade.

During the August 22 A.M.A.N.Live broadcast, producer and director Yoji Fujito said the company hopes to roll out the expanded trial as early as September.

The expanded free trial will still have significant restrictions after the playtime limit is removed. Free players will only be able to access areas from the original version of the MMO, with expansion zones remaining off-limits.

Players can use the six starting jobs and unlock six more: Paladin, Beastmaster, Dark Knight, Bard, Ranger, and Summoner. Trial accounts will still be limited to three characters and 100,000 gil.

Key features like trading, the auction house, bazaars, some chat functions, World transfers, and certain party features will remain restricted.

Throughout 2026, Square Enix has worked to make Final Fantasy 11 easier for both new and returning players. In March, the company started improving Trust NPCs to support more solo play.

April updates made map unlocks cheaper and revised tutorial quests for beginners. In May, Square Enix added clearer objectives and guidance for character progression.

The July update changed several default display and camera settings to better match modern games. According to Fujito, these changes are meant to make the MMORPG more accessible to newcomers.

Some improvements are still in progress, including making solo play and character leveling easier, adding better automatic grouping, and simplifying fast travel by combining some Home Point and Survival Guide features.

Final Fantasy 11, once known as FFXI Online, marked its 24th anniversary in May 2026. The PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions shut down in early 2016, but the PC version is still running a decade later.

Square Enix has tried several ways to let players access Vana’diel without a subscription, including launching a trial in October 2008 and reintroducing it in May 2017 with the level cap raised.

They have also run recurring “Return Home to Vana’diel” campaigns that temporarily waive subscription fees for eligible former players.

Square Enix has set September 2026 as a target, not a confirmed release date, and the exact launch window for the unlimited trial is still unconfirmed, depending on separate account-system maintenance scheduled for the end of September.

It is still uncertain when the trial will launch.
