Safaricom rolls out affordable multi-branch network service

Safaricom has launched a managed SD-WAN service designed for businesses operating multiple branches, with pricing starting at KES 9,500 a month per branch under a 36-month contract. The service consolidates fibre, 4G, 5G, broadband, dedicated internet, and MPLS into a unified network that automatically reroutes traffic if one connection fails. This ensures uninterrupted access to critical functions like payment terminals, inventory systems, and online ordering.

The service is tailored for industries where reliable connectivity across locations is essential, including retail, banking, manufacturing, distributors, and healthcare. Retailers can maintain seamless point-of-sale operations across stores, while banks can synchronize ATMs and branch networks. Three pricing tiers, Basic Plus, Standard Plus, and Advanced Plus, offer decreasing costs for longer commitments. For branches, the Basic Plus plan drops from KES 19,800 (12 months) to KES 9,500 (36 months), with headquarters equipment priced at KES 29,500 for the longest term.

The system prioritizes traffic, ensuring customer payments and business communications receive priority over less critical internet traffic. Built-in security features eliminate the need for separate firewalls at each location. Safaricom’s Ready Mobility feature allows businesses to use 4G or 5G as temporary connections until fibre is deployed, speeding up setup for new branches. A unified dashboard lets IT teams monitor all sites from a single interface, complemented by 24/7 technical support.

The offering maintains compatibility with existing connections from other providers, simplifying transitions for current customers. All equipment, software, maintenance, and support are included in the monthly fee, with connectivity charges billed separately. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom PLC, said, “For a business with several branches, a single connection failure can stop sales, leave staff unable to reach the systems they need and keep customers waiting.” The service brings those connections under one managed network for a predictable monthly fee, allowing businesses to expand without a large upfront investment in hardware, with Safaricom providing the support.
