According to the 2024 BoE/FCA survey, 75% of UK-based financial firms have adopted AI, up from 58% in 2022.

Technology is reshaping the trading experience, from mobile platforms to AI-driven analysis. The entire trade cycle can now be managed digitally, with tools like real-time data and execution algorithms streamlining processes. However, the execution layer of trading has outpaced the decision-making side, highlighting a key imbalance.

AI’s Growing Role in Trading Decisions

Artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing trading decisions. According to the 2024 BoE/FCA survey, 75% of UK-based financial firms have adopted AI, up from 58% in 2022. While 55% of use cases involve automated decision-making, only 2% operate without human oversight. Generative AI remains the most influential technology for the third consecutive year, as noted in J.P. Morgan’s 2026 e-Trading Survey.

Despite AI’s advancements, human involvement persists. Models analyze data faster, but traders still finalize decisions. This blend of technology and human judgment reflects the current state of trading evolution.

The Shift to Electronic Trading

Electronic trading is on the rise, with projections indicating it will cover 60% of trades by 2026 and 70% by 2027. However, MiFID II defines algorithmic trading narrowly, requiring minimal human input for order parameters like timing and volume.

In retail trading, automation tools like Expert Advisors on MetaTrader remain popular. Brokers such as Pepperstone, Interactive Brokers, and Saxo cater to traders seeking programmability through APIs and FIX connectivity.

Mobile Trading’s Impact and Risks

Mobile trading has transformed where and how quickly trades occur. In Plus500’s 2025 results, 89% of OTC income came from mobile or tablet apps. The FCA’s 2024 research found that 48% of mobile trading app users were under 35 years old.

However, an NBER paper using data from German banks linked mobile trading to riskier behavior, such as buying lottery-like assets and return chasing. This highlights that convenience doesn’t always lead to better outcomes.

JustMarkets’ Trading Technology
