OpenAI Unveils Next Generation AI Model

OpenAI has announced GPT-6 Astra, its latest model, which it calls its most intelligent and aligned so far. Astra is rolling out today to a small group of organizations, with wider access planned soon. According to OpenAI, Astra is state-of-the-art for computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, science, and professional work.

The model scores high on various benchmarks. It meets the Critical threshold for cybersecurity in OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework, which means extra safeguards are in place.

Astra sets new records in several benchmarks. On Terminal-Bench Science 0.1, which measures scientific research workflows using code and terminal tools, Astra scores 64.6%. Claude Fable 5.1 scores 52.6% on the same test, with Astra’s API cost estimated to be about 31% lower.

On Agents’ Last Exam, Astra scores 59.3%. Claude Opus 5 scores 55.5% and GPT-5.6 Sol scores 53.6%. Astra also uses about 65% fewer output tokens than Opus 5 on this test.

OpenAI says Astra is trained for both computer use and professional work. It can produce documents, spreadsheets, and presentations that follow templates and match a user’s style. On BenchCAD, Astra scores 95.9%.

OpenAI says Astra is its best model yet for software engineering. With Astra, Codex adds a new way to keep and retrieve context when the context window is full. Instead of compressing everything into one summary, it keeps searchable notes across context windows.

In terms of cybersecurity, OpenAI says Astra meets the Critical threshold in its Preparedness Framework. Without production safeguards, Astra scores high on ExploitBench, compared to GPT-5.6 Sol.

Astra will become available to all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in the next few days. It will also be offered through the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure, and AWS Bedrock.
